Sie setzt das Innenleben ihres Protagonisten in einen auffälligen Kontrast zu seiner Wirkung auf die Außenwelt. Während der Leser auf der einen Seite einen stark und selbstbewusst agierenden Florentin erlebt, hat er auch immer wieder Einblicke in das Gefühlschaos der Titelfigur, welches Unsicherheit und Unruhe widerspiegelt.
Wäre dem Leser die Kenntnis von Florentins innerer Zerrissenheit nicht bekannt, würde er sich ein völlig anderes Bild von diesem machen. Stark, selbstsicher, mutig und tapfer entspräche er dem gängigen Bild eines Helden. Diese Gegensätzlichkeit von Innenleben und Wirkung auf die Außenwelt könnte jedoch ebenso einen Rückschluss darauf geben, dass es sich bei der Figur des Florentin um die eines Antihelden handelt. Der Antiheld wird dadurch charakterisiert, dass er nicht fehlerfrei und perfekt ist, sondern auch eine oder mehrere Schwächen aufzuweisen hat. In diesem Fall wären die Selbstzweifel und Unsicherheiten Florentins als eine charakterliche Schwäche auszulegen, die auf den Leser zwar sympathisch wirken kann, aber das Heldenbild nicht entstehen lässt.
Trotz dieser Selbstzweifel und Misserfolge im Leben des Florentin bin ich jedoch letztendlich zu dem Schluss gekommen, dass Dorothea Schlegel in ihrer Hauptfigur einen Helden sah und diesen auch so charakterisieren wollte. Sie hat meiner Meinung nach eine Figur erschaffen, die erkennen lässt, dass ein Held nicht unbedingt fehlerfrei und perfekt sein muss, um ein eben solcher zu sein. Diese Schlussfolgerung lässt sich gut an dem Roman nachvollziehen und an den verschiedensten Textstellen aufzeigen. Ich werde im Folgenden so vorgehen, dass ich vorerst kurz darauf eingehen werde, was einen Helden im Roman charakterisiert. Anschließend werde ich mich mit Florentins heldenhafter Wirkung auf die Außenwelt befassen, um danach seine inneren Unsicherheiten und Selbstzweifel näher zu untersuchen. Hierbei stelle ich insbesondere den ihn kennzeichnenden Kontrast zwischen seinem heldenhaften Auftreten und seiner inneren Sensibilität dar.
