Er spielte sich nicht als Eroberer auf, wie die Perser es getan hatten, sondern akzeptierte die Religion der Ägypter und wurde sogar zum ,,Sohn des Amon“ erklärt. Doch ein Jahr später verließ Alexander Ägypten, das trotz allem nur eine Kolonie des Makedoniers war, und setzte einen sog. Satrap als Vizekönig ein. Über ein Jahrzehnt hinweg wurde Ägypten auf diese Weise regiert. Im Jahr 323 v.Chr. hatte Ptolemaios das Amt des Satrapen inne. In diesem Jahr starb Alexander der Große und seine Generäle teilten sein riesiges Imperium unter sich auf. Ptolemaios blieb weiterhin der Satrap von Ägypten. Erst achtzehn Jahre später erklärte sich Ptolemaios zum Alleinherrscher, dem Pharao Ägyptens, und nahm den Namen Ptolemaios I. Soter an. Er brachte den Wohlstand und das Ansehen nach Ägypten zurück, denn er förderte die Künste und war ein kluger Stratege. So begann er z.B. mit dem Bau des Pharos Leuchtturms in Alexandria und holte den bekannten Intellektuellen Demetrios von Phaleron an seinen Hof. Mit seinen zwei Frauen Berenike und Eurydike hatte er zahlreiche Kinder. Unter ihnen Ptolemaios II., der im Jahr 282 v.Chr. Alleinherrscher über Ägypten wurde. Er war ein Freund der Kunst und der Wissenschaften und setzte die Pläne seines Vaters fort. Einige Jahre später kam es zu einem Ereignis, das einen Skandal bei den Griechen hervorrief: Ptolemaios II. heiratete seine Vollschwester Arsinoë II. In den darauf folgenden Jahren nahmen der Einfluss und die Macht Arsinoës II. stetig zu. Man sagt Ptolemaios II. war vielmehr ,,ein Schöngeist, der sich lieber dem Luxus und den Sinnesfreuden widmete als den Regierungsgeschäften “. Doch auf seine Weise verehrte Ptolemaios II. seine Frau und Schwester. Bereits zu Lebzeiten baute er einen göttlich-mystischen Kult um sie auf und nach ihrem Tod ließ er sie als ,,bruderliebende Göttin“ anbeten. Doch obwohl ,,Theokrit ihre Schönheit mit jener Aphrodites und Helenas [verglich]; Kallimachos […] ihre posthume Erhebung in den Olymp [beschrieb] und Poseidippos […] sie als Schützgöttin dar[stellte] “, beschreiben die Forschungen Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts sie als gemeine Intrigantin, die nur auf ihren Vorteil bedacht war und über Leichen ging um ihre Ziele zu erreichen.
