Ma quando la promessa sposa, la contessina Korotkòv, gli rivela di essere stata amante proprio dello Zar, il principe Stjepàn lascia la divisa e si rifugia in convento. Diventato “Padre Sergio” diviene talmente celebre da essere trasferito non lontano dalla capitale dove le dame tornano a far di tutto per essere ammesse al suo cospetto. Così decide di lasciare anche il convento per diventare eremita, Ormai vicino a chiudere in perfezione una vita alla ricerca di forza interiore, morale e verità, con i pellegrini che accorrono da ogni parte, Padre Sergio cadrà nel peccato, sedotto da una ragazza «isterica», che gli è stata portata perché la guarisse. Sconvolto per avere perduto, dopo le ambizioni umane anche le spirituali, l'ex principe ed ex sant'uomo torna di nascosto all'antico villaggio d'infanzia in cerca d’una bambina che tutti prendevano in giro, la sempliciotta Pàsenka. La donna è anziana, con tanti guai familiari, Stupita di vedersi davanti il compagno di giochi la cui fama di santo l'ha tante volte commossa, gli racconta la propria semplice vita in breve. Padre Sergio è folgorato. L'ossessiva ricerca di successo, dall'esercito alla Chiesa, lo ha allontanato dalla gente semplice, la famiglia, il villaggio, da cui ha cercato di distinguersi, pur di essere «migliore».
