En los presentes decretos Ignacio Agramonte, líder de la independencia cubana, proclamó la libertad de los esclavos y participó en la redacción y aprobación de la Constitución de Guáimaro; en la que se proclaman los poderes fácticos que regirían la primera Guerra de Independencia de Cuba contra España.
Reproducimos como ejemplo una parte del Decreto de extinción de la esclavitud (Capítulo XI de los Decretos del Comité Revolucionario de Camagüey,1869)

La institución de la esclavitud traída a Cuba por la dominación española, debe extinguirse con ella.
La Asamblea de Representantes del Centro, teniendo en consideración los principios de eterna justicia, en nombre de la libertad y del pueblo que representa, decreta:

1º Queda abolida la esclavitud.

2° Oportunamente serán indemnizados los dueños de los que hasta hoy han sido esclavos.
