Zunächst fasziniert von der 16mm-Kamera seines Vaters, bekam er irgendwann eine eigene Kamera, und es begann für ihn die Überlegung, was es denn mit dieser einzufangen galt. Da Gardner sich selbst ein Verständnis von Film und Filmemachen aneignen musste - es gab kaum derartige Ausbildungsmöglichkeiten - verschlang er zunächst die Filme, die in den damaligen Kinos gespielt wurden. Gardner sah das Filmemachen als eine Art Kunstform an und umso kunstvoller erschien es ihm, wenn es Filmemachern gelang, Emotionen und Stimmungen der realen Welt in Form eines Films zu konservieren. Diese reale Welt zu bewahren, liegt - so zitiert Gardner den englischen Dichter Philip Larkin - "aller Kunst zugrunde."
Es kristallisierte sich also schnell ein Interesse an nicht-fiktiven Filmen heraus. Gardner schreibt in dem Text "Der Impuls zu bewahren", dass er Filme, wie "The private life of a cat" - von Maya Derens - noch immer am meisten liebt, denn es gelang ihr in diesem Film, Aktualität statt Phantasie in den Vordergrund zu stellen, was Gardner nachhaltig beeindruckte. Er beschreibt Filme wie diesen als visuell eindrucksvoller und als sehr viel herzbewegender als fiktive und surrealistische Werke.
Mit Hilfe des Films bzw. der Kamera war es Gardner nun also möglich, seine eigenen Empfindungen, bezüglich eines Teils der äußeren realen Welt, wiederzugeben, wenn es auch ihm gelingen würde, sie mit der Kamera einzufangen.
