In dem Beitrag zur „Willenstherapie“ von Otto Rank zeigt Erich Fromm gewisse Parallelen zwischen den anthropologischen Überzeugungen des deutschen und des italienischen Faschismus und Ranks Menschenbild auf. Diese veranlassten Fromm, in diesem 1939 veröffentlichten Beitrag Rank in die Nähe der faschistischen Doktrin zu bringen. Zugleich ist dieser erste, in englischer Sprache veröffentlichte Beitrag der einzige, bei dem Fromm Zweifel hatte, ob er in die Erich Fromm-Gesamtausgabe aufgenommen werden sollte. Im Rückblick erkannte Fromm, dass er der Bedeutung Ranks mit diesem Beitrag nicht gerecht geworden sei.
