E. Lessing ein Dramenmotiv auf, das auf den antiken Historiker Livius zurückgeht.
Er übernimmt das Motiv aus der von Titus Livius in „Ab urbe condita“ erzählten Legende von der Römerin Virginia, die von ihrem Vater getötet wird, weil das der einzige Weg ist, sie vor der Willkür des Decemvirn Appius Claudius zu bewahren. Bei Livius ruft die Tat von Virginias Vater einen Volksaufstand hervor, [...]. Auch „Emilia Galotti“ hat die Leidenschaft ihres Landesherren, des Prinzen von Guastalla, erregt. Er will sie zu seiner Mätresse mach, doch sie lässt sich von ihren Vater töten.

Von der Virginiasaga abweichend skizziert Lessing in einer seiner frühen brieflichen Äußerungen (an Nicolai vom 21.01.1758) den Plan seines Stückes zunächst so: „Er- der junge Tragikus [ d. h. Lessing selbst ] - hat nämlich die Geschichte der römischen Virginia von allem dem abgesondert, was sie für die ganze Stadt interessant machte; er hat geglaubt, dass das Schicksal einer Tochter, die von ihrem Vater umgebracht wird, dem ihre Tugend werter ist, als ihr Leben, für sich schon tragisch genug, und fähig genug sei, die ganze Seele zu erschüttern, wenn auch gleich kein Umsturz der ganzen Staatsverfassung darauf folgte.“.

Es soll also in erster Linie das Feld der Moral sein, auf dem die Auseinandersetzung zwischen Bürgertum und Adel sich auf der Bühne abspielt. Deshalb muss man das Adjektiv „bürgerlich“ nicht in erster Linie als Bezeichnung für eine Klasse verstehen, sondern als Kennzeichnung einer bestimmten moralischen Wertvorstellung, die sich von der Welt der höfischen Unmoral abhebt. In dem Drama geht es nicht so sehr um Klassengegensätze, sondern mehr um tugendhaftes menschliches Verhalten.

Diese Haltung ist nicht an die Klasse des Bürgertums gebunden. So können auch Angehörige des Adels die Rolle des Helden im bürgerlichen Trauerspiel übernehmen, wie beispielsweise Ferdinand von Walter in „Kabale und Liebe“. Lessings bürgerliches Trauerspiel zeigt sowohl den erwachenden Widerstand des bürgerlichen Selbstbewusstseins, als auch dessen Zuflucht zum Selbstopfer.
