Tatsächlich weckt die Lektüre der Buddenbrooks jedoch unwillkürlich Verständnis für so viel Forschungsinteresse. Die vom Anfang zwanzigjährigen Thomas Mann meisterhaft komponierte Verfallsgeschichte einer bürgerlichen Familie ist schlicht erstaunlich. Die Detailgenauigkeit, die ruhige und doch fesselnde Erzählweise, die entlarvenden Personenbeschreibungen, im Ganzen, die kaum auslotbare Vielschichtigkeit des Romans, machen ihn einzigartig. Auch Lenz beschließt seine Ausführungen über die Buddenbrooks dementsprechend: „Es ist wohl schon so, daß man dieses welthaltige Erzählwerk als Leser nur annäherungsweise ausmessen kann."
Um diesen Gedanken Rechnung zu tragen, befasst sich auch die vorliegende Arbeit nur mit einem Teilaspekt des Jahrhundertwerkes, genauer gesagt, nur mit einer Figur: Christian Buddenbrook. Dieser höchst beachtenswerte Charakter zieht unwillkürlich die Aufmerksamkeit des Lesers an. Mit seinen unterhaltsamen Eigenschaften sorgt er bereits als Kind in Gesellschaften für Kurzweil. Doch trotz aller Komik die dieser Figur innewohnt, trotz allem Witz, die sie versprüht, zeichnet sie sich doch auch durch Merkmale des Verfalls aus.
