In seinem sozial-kritisch motivierten Hollywood-Roman beschreibt West anhand einer kleinen Schar von Protagonisten das Leben in der Traumfabrik Amerikas. So kristallisiert West nicht nur durch die Charakteristika einzelner Protagonisten, sondern vor allem durch den Umgang derselbigen untereinander, die Welt des scheinbaren Glücks und der Zufriedenheit.
Wie differenziert und mit welchen Stilmitteln er diese Umsetzung erreicht, wird zunächst an der Unterscheidung sowie Erläuterung zweier Menschentypen ersichtlich, welche sich in Los Angeles nach Ansicht eines der Protagonisten, Tod Hacketts, befinden. Erweitert und ausformuliert wird diese Unterteilung durch eine von Riesman ebenfalls vorgenommene Unterscheidung von Menschentypen. Nachdem die relevanten Protagonisten vorgestellt, als auch ihr Beziehungsgeflecht untereinander komprimiert analysiert wurden, ist die Vorrausetzung für eine folgerichtige Zuordnung unter die vorgestellten Typ-Kategorien nach West und Riesman geschaffen.
Ausgehend von dieser Typus-Zuordnung und der Bedeutung, die einigen Protagonisten daraus erwachsen, ist die Hinwendung zum Thema „Masse“ als Kriterium der Moderne nur konsequent. Dabei gilt es über die bloße Masse als Definition als auch dessen Charakteristika nach Hannelore Bublitz hinaus zuschreiten und die Verbindung zu Wests Novelle anhand von Zitaten und Romanauszügen herzustellen.
Erst nach der ausführlichen Untersuchung des Verhältnisses von Masse zum Individuum, bzw. der Protagonisten in West Roman zur Masse als auch zur Individualität, ist die Hinwendung zur eigentlichen Intention, ausgedrückt durch das Gemälde, welches Tod Hackett zu zeichnen anstrebt, möglich. Seine Intention, als auch die Art und Weise dieselbige im Bild, restriktive im Roman umzusetzen, bilden den analytischen Abschluss der Betrachtung.
