Jahrhunderts in England und Schottland beeinflussten in wohl nicht unerheblichem Maße das Denken eines Mannes, der als Begründer des Kontraktualismus gilt. Thomas Hobbes von Malmsbury lebte von 1588 bis 1679 und war vor allem durch die Wissenschaft seiner Zeit geprägt. Er hatte Umgang mit einigen Größen seiner Zeit, unter anderem mit Gilles Personne de Roberval, Pierre Gassendi, Galileo Galilei und René Descartes. Hobbes, der in besonderem Maße von der Mathematik beeindruckt war, schuf eine Staatsphilosophie, die sich durch eine enorme Einheitlichkeit auszeichnet, trotz dessen dass sie sich in mehreren Werken manifestiert. Primär in seinem dreigeteilten Werk Elementa Philosophiae und in Leviathan legt er die Idee des Übergangs vom natürlichen zum künstlichen Menschen dar. Hobbes schafft die Theorie des Gesellschaftsvertrages, deren Kern die Notwendigkeit von staatlicher Herrschaft ist. In einem dreistufigen Argumentationsmuster, dass bei den physikalischen Gegebenheiten und der kognitiven Funktionsweise der Lebewesen beginnt und über die Betrachtung des Menschen im individuellen und sozialen Kontext in einer Theorie des Staates und seiner Herrschaft mündet, inhäriert Hobbes seine Ansichten über Naturphilosophie, Anthropologie und politische Philosophie. Auch eine Moraltheorie lässt sich in den Werken finden, die jedoch keine wirkliche Moralphilosophie darstellt, da sie rein hedonistisch begründet ist. Das Ziel dieser Arbeit soll es sein, Hobbes’ Überlegungen, die Voraussetzungen der Vertragstheorie sind oder diese direkt zum Gegenstand haben, darzulegen. Besonderer Fokus liegt dabei auf den Fragen, ob eine staatliche Gewalt notwendig ist und inwieweit sie ungeteilt sein muss.
