Wie die zahlreichen Referate im Hauptseminar „Alexander“ gezeigt haben, skizziert jeder Forscher bzw. Historiker sein „eigenes“ Alexanderbild, das in der Tat vom Weltbeglücker bis zum Psychopathen reicht. In der vorliegenden Hausarbeit wird der Autor nun die Alexander-Biografie Ulrich Wilckens vorstellen und untersuchen, inwiefern der Althistoriker ein realistisches Alexanderbild vermittelt.
Dabei darf der Leser durchaus hohe Erwartungen an die Arbeit Wilckens stellen, bezeichnet Walther Kolbe es in seiner Rezension aus dem Jahre 1931 doch als „ein Werk aus dem Geiste der Rankeschen Schule, es strebt nach Objektivität“ (2) . Der Rezensent überschüttet Wilcken förmlich mit Lob und preist das Buch als Schriftstück, das „in der Alexanderforschung einen guten Schritt vorwärts bedeutet“ (3.).
Der Autor wird sich den Lobpreisungen Kolbes indes nur teilweise anschließen können. Er will aufzeigen, dass Wilcken nur bedingt reüssiert – und zudem ganz entscheidende Facetten Alexanders unter den Tisch kehrt oder schlichtweg unrealistisch beurteilt.
