Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 1999 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Literaturgeschichte, Epochen, Note: Sehr gut, Universität Wien (Institut für Germanistik), Veranstaltung: Seminar Neuere deutsche Literatur – Der Schriftsteller, das Geld und das Recht, 13 Quellen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die Beziehung zwischen Autor und Verleger ist nicht nur auf das Manuskript beschränkt, sondern sehr vielschichtig, häufig auch kompliziert und spannungsgeladen. Dies zeichnete auch das Verhältnis zwischen Goethe und Cotta aus, wobei die beiden Männer auch eine persönliche Freundschaft verband und sie immer größte Hochachtung voreinander hatten.
Die vorliegende Arbeit gliedert sich in vier Kapitel. Im ersten setzte ich mich mit der Geschichte des Cotta Verlages sowie mit der Biographie Johann Friedrich Cottas auseinander. Außerdem gebe ich hier einen Überblick über das Programm und die Autoren des Verlages. Im nächsten Kapitel beschreibe ich, wie die Verbindung zwischen Goethe und Cotta begonnen hat und bringe in diesem Zusammenhang auch einige Auszüge aus dem gemeinsamen Briefwechsel. In Kapitel drei widme ich mich den Werken Goethes, die Cotta verlegt hat, wobei ich auch auf unternehmerische Überlegungen Cottas sowie auf die Auflagenhöhe und den Absatz der Werke eingehe. Besonders ausführlich beschreibe ich die Situation um das Erscheinen der Ausgabe letzter Hand, da sie das Problem des Nachdruckes zu dieser Zeit deutlich macht sowie Goethes Einstellung zu Honorarfragen zeigt. Im letzten Kapitel setzte ich mich mit dem komplizierten Verhältnis zwischen Autor und Verleger auseinander, wobei ich auch hier wieder einige Briefe zitiere. Ich gehe auf Konflikte, die Goethe und Cotta miteinander hatten, sowie auf deren Vermittler, die sie in diesen Fällen heranzogen, ein. Zuletzt widme ich mich Goethes und Cottas Beziehung zum Geld, die einige Mißstimmigkeiten zwischen Autor und Verleger hervorrief. Hier beschreibe ich auch die damals übliche Honorierungspraxis von Autoren, an deren Änderung Goethe und Cotta maßgeblich beteiligt waren. Auch auf die Probleme mit dem Nachdruck komme ich in diesem Kapitel noch einmal zurück. Abschließend fasse ich die wichtigsten Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit zusammen.
