In diesem Jahr landete Jaques Cartier an der Küste Kanadas und errichtete in der Bucht von Gaspé ein Steinkreuz zu Ehren des französischen Königs François I, in dessen Auftrag der französische Seefahrer handelte. In den Jahren 1535 bis 1542 setzte Cartier seine Erkundungstouren fort und erforschte das neue Land außerhalb Europas. Im Jahre 1542 startete die französische Krone den ersten Siedlungsversuch, der jedoch auf Grund der strengen Klimaverhältnisse und der Disziplinlosigkeit der ersten kanadischen Franzosen scheiterte. Der französische Entdecker Samuel de Champlain hatte mehr Erfolg. Er gründete am 03. Juli1608 die französische Siedlung Québec und legte damit den Grundstein für die französische Zivilisation in Kanada. Die Siedlung Québec war der Ausgangspunkt für zahlreiche Expeditionen ins Landesinnere. So wurde 1641 die Siedlung Ville-Marie, der Ursprung der Stadt Montreal, gegründet. Mit der Zeit dehnten die Franzosen ihr Siedlungsgebiet aus (Hoerkens 1997, 5 und Wolf 1985, 1-2).

In Kanada werden zur Zeit etwa 200 Sprachen aktiv gesprochen. Den größten Anteil macht dabei das Englische aus. An zweiter Stelle kommt das Französische, das seine Hochzeit im europäischen Absolutismus und zu Zeiten der Kolonialisierung im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert hatte. Die anderen Sprachen, die in Kanada gesprochen werden, machen insgesamt nur einen kleinen Anteil aus.

Die Unterschiede zwischen dem Québecois und dem Standardfranzösisch Frankreichs sind im Wesentlichen darauf zurückzuführen, dass die Sprachstufe der Siedler, die im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert in der neuen Welt sesshaft wurden, weitestgehend beibehalten wurde bzw. sich unter anderen Einflüssen anders entwickelt hat als das Französische in Europa. Durch den für die Franzosen verheerenden Ausgang des siebenjährigen Krieges 1763 gelangten die französischen Siedlungen in Kanada unter britischen Besitz. Dadurch wurde der sprachliche Kontakt zu Frankreich so sehr eingeschränkt, dass Neuerungen von dort Kanada kaum mehr erreichen konnten. Die französische Sprache in Kanada entwickelt sich somit anders als in Europa. Ein weiterer Grund für die Veränderung der Sprache ist auch, dass in der Region Québec Dialekte aus verschiedenen Regionen Frankreichs aufeinander trafen, sich vermischten und damit ein verändertes Sprachbild ergaben.
