Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 1996 im Fachbereich Geschichte - Weltgeschichte - Frühgeschichte, Antike, Note: 1, Universität Konstanz (Geschichte und Soziologie), Veranstaltung: Proseminar: Sparta, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Das zentrale Ereignis der Helotenfurcht in Sparta war das große Erdbeben im Jahr 464 v.Chr., das einen Aufstand der messenischen Heloten nach sich zog. Weder vor, noch nach dieser gewaltsamen Erhebung der Heloten, sind bei den antiken Autoren Aufstände ähnlichen Ausmaßes bekannt.

Die Heloten entstanden aus der von den Dorern unterworfenen Bevölkerung1. In einem ersten Schritt wurden die Einwohner Lakoniens von den Spartanern zu Staatssklaven gemacht, bevor später die in zwei Kriegen unterworfenen Messenier in das System der Helotie integriert wurden2.

Gegenstand dieser Arbeit ist es zu untersuchen, inwiefern sich die Behandlung der Heloten und der Umgang mit diesem Konfliktpotential seitens der Spartaner durch den Aufstand geändert hat. Eine Darstellung der Situation vor 464 ist zur Beurteilung der Problematik ebenfalls unerläßlich. Als Vorgeschichte des Helotenaufstandes ergibt sich aus Thukydides Geschichtswerk über den Peloponnesischen Krieg die Verschwörung des Pausanias, an der die Heloten beteiligt gewesen sein sollen. Dieses Ereignis wird im ersten Teil dieser Arbeit behandelt. Der zweite Abschnitt erläutert den Aufstand selbst und beleuchtet seine Ursachen und seinen Verlauf. Durch die Umstände des Peloponnesischen Krieges und der äußeren Bedrohung des spartanischen Staates durch Athen, treten die sozialen Spannungen wieder in den Vordergrund. Die Ereignisse Mitte bis Ende der 420er Jahre bis zum Nikias- Frieden werden im dritten Abschnitt näher betrachtet.

Im letzten Teil der vorliegenden Arbeit wird auf das Alltagsleben der Heloten, ihre Rolle im spartanischen Kriegswesen, ihre Bildung und ihr Bewußtsein sowie ihre Rolle im spartanischen Staatsgebilde eingegangen.
