Il caso ha voluto che un collega, acquisita la proprietà di un immobile con terreno e bosco annessi, mi manifestasse l’intenzione di tagliare qualche albero per produrre un po’ di carbone vegetale, non avendo lui una benché minima cognizione del procedimento da seguire. Così sono andato a pescare nelle mie reminiscenze di un lontanissimo passato di vita lavorativa per poter dare qualche suggerimento pratico.
Questa opportunità mi ha dato modo di ripensare alla particolare esperienza che ho vissuto nei primi anni della vita nei boschi della Sila, dove i miei genitori e prima ancora i nonni, producevano appunto, il carbone vegetale.
Considerando che, quello del carbonaio, è un mestiere quasi estinto e gli ultimi irriducibili ormai lo esercitano in condizioni meno disagiate rispetto agli anni 40-50-60, quando le economie di alcuni paesini della fascia presilana si fondavano quasi esclusivamente sulla produzione del carbone vegetale e sull’allevamento, mi è venuta l’idea di redigere una sorta di manuale del carbonaio, un documento che poteva costituire una testimonianza a futura memoria sugli aspetti peculiari di una professionalità in netto declino, forse prossima all’estinzione.
L’idea originale era di elaborare una vera e propria guida pratica al mestiere, ma fin dalle prime pagine, quando rievocando i vecchi ricordi ho dovuto constatare che riemergevano particolari interessanti ed inconsueti, non strettamente legati alla professione, ma riguardanti lo stile di vita inevitabilmente connesso a questa scelta lavorativa, e che in sostanza, non potevano essere ignorati, ho pensato di ripiegare su una impostazione diversa: trattare in maniera più essenziale e solo nella prima parte il tema: “Guida alla professione” e indugiare un po’ di più sugli aspetti umani e sulle condizioni di vita. Nell’arco dell’anno l’attività lavorativa era subordinata ai ritmi scolastici. Durante i mesi inclusi tra l’autunno e la primavera, era solo il capofamiglia ad andare a lavorare nei boschi, prediligendo quelli situati a quote basse, per evitare i rigori dell’inverno. In coincidenza della fine dell’anno scolastico, tutta la famiglia veniva coinvolta nell’attività, mamma, papà, bambini, ragazzi e animali domestici, tutti in montagna, prevalentemente nei boschi della Sila fino alla riapertura delle scuole. Nelle pagine seguenti leggerete, appunto, la descrizione delle vicende familiari, umane e lavorative, durante una di queste tipiche stagioni estive.
