Prägung der modernen Gesellschaft. Er veranschaulicht verschiedene Handlungsoptionen zur Distanzwahrung, die von der Gesellschaft vorgegeben werden. Damit erklärt er die emotionale Kälte zur Signatur der modernen Epoche. Das Verständnis von Kälte als sozial anerkannte Verhaltensweise führt Lethen auf höfisch barocke Sitten zurück. E.T.A. Hoffmann bedient sich in „Die Bergwerke von Falun" diverser Inszenierungsformen von Kälte. Die Erzählung aus dem Sammelwerk „Die Serapionsbrüder" stellt immer wieder der Wärme der Oberwelt die Verlockungen der kalten Bergwerkswelt entgegen.
Der Dualismus Wärme - Kälte, Liebe - Erotik, Alltag - Kunst macht diese Erzählung zu
einer „modernen" Studie über den Menschen und seine Gelüste. Die Erkaltung bietet
dem Menschen die Möglichkeit sich von der Gesellschaft, der er sich nicht zugehörig
fühlt, abzugrenzen. Die Flucht des jungen Bergmanns Elis aus der natürlichen Oberwelt
in eine künstliche, kalte Unterwelt der Selbstbespiegelung bietet viele
Interpretationsmöglichkeiten:
Kann die Kälte der Bergwerkswelt exemplarisch gesehen werden für das Ideal des
asketischen Künstlers? Wie sind die zwei gegensätzlich dargestellten Frauentypen
konstituiert - ist die Bergkönigin der Vorläufer der modernen femme fatale? Kann nur die
„Erkaltung" des Menschen den Zugang zu einem höheren Künstlerideal ermöglichen?
Bietet das Abkehren von der Natur und die Hinwendung zum Künstlichen
(Künstlerischen) dem Künstler Erfüllung? Ist der Rückzug des Menschen in die Einsamkeit die Konsequenz einer sich ständig verändernden unverständlicher werdenden Welt?

Die intertextuelle Betrachtung bildet die Grundlage dafür, die Hoffmann´sche Erzählung
in einen größeren Zusammenhang einzuordnen zu können. Denn
