The neural mechanisms allowing ants to distinguish between friends and enemies are still not completely understood, and it is unclear whether learning plays a crucial role in this process. However, learning does play an important role when distinguishing individual identity is beneficial, as in the case of co-founding associations of ant queens that establish a dominance hierarchy. Recently, a set of experimental tools has been developed to study learning and memory in ants. This will allow exploring cognitive abilities and their underlying mechanisms in this very diverse taxon.
