Handelt es sich dabei um eine Art „Börsenplacebo“ oder wirklich um eine gewinnbringende Weisheit? Offensichtlich scheint es genügend Investoren zu geben, welche diesem Motto folgen. Wie wäre es sonst erklärbar, dass selbst in Zeiten langer und stark gestiegener Kurse immer wieder genügend Investoren auf der Käuferseite zu finden sind. Oder spielt die Psychologie den Anlegern einen Streich? Diese finden oftmals erst dann den Mut, eine Aktie zu kaufen, wenn die Kurse bereits stark gestiegen sind und es als völlig normal gilt, dieses Wertpapier zu kaufen. Dabei können die Gründe, in einen Markt einzusteigen, der sich bereits stark bewegt hat, vielfältiger Natur sein. Vielleicht wurde der Markt zuvor nicht beachtet oder es wurde vergeblich auf eine Kurskorrektur gewartet. Möglicherweise war man anfangs skeptisch über die Dauer der Kursbewegung und hat daher ganz bewusst einen Kursanstieg abgewartet.
Das letzte Motiv ist der typische Beweggrund für Trendfolger. Dabei werden sie in der Praktikerliteratur durch eine Fülle von Ratschlägen unterstützt: Die Handlungsmaxime, „sich niemals gegen den Trend stemmen“ zielt auf die gleiche Börseneinstellung ab, wie „Never catch a falling knife“ oder „It is easier to swim with the tide than against it“. Das Resultat führte ebenfalls zu einem populären Slogan: „Die Hausse nährt die Hausse“ bzw. im Falle von sinkenden Kursen zu „Die Baisse nährt die Baisse“. Kaufen institutionelle Anleger vermehrt gut gelaufene Aktien, um am Jahresende Gewinnaktien ausweisen zu können, kann dieser Effekt noch weiter verstärkt werden. Ist es aber wirklich profitabel, auf einen fahrenden Zug aufzuspringen? Wie riskant ist die Einstellung „Noch schnell dabei sein, ehe der Markt dreht“? Haben Trendfolger das Potential für Überrenditen?
Diesen Fragen wird im Rahmen dieser Diplomarbeit nachgegangen. Neben allgemeinen Erläuterungen zu den Finanzmärkten werden einige Trendfolgekonzepte und Studien zu deren Erfolg vorgestellt. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf Strategien, welche die lineare Regression beinhalten. Kern der Arbeit ist die Vorstellung einer Trendfolgestrategie und deren Evaluierung anhand von DAX- und Dow Jones-Aktien zwischen Januar 1997 und Mai 2006.
