Et tous ces éclopés jeunes et vaillants. Que vont-ils faire dans la misère où nous entrons. Comment vont les accueillir celles qui les aimaient. Il y a là un roman à faire : le Blessé, volontaire par amour revenant estropié après avoir vu tout ce qu’il y a de caractéristique dans cette guerre, et remercié par celle qu’il aime.

Ecrit dans sa maison de Fontenay-sous-Bois encore occupée par l’ennemi, Souvenirs d’un blessé paraît dès novembre 1871.

Mon nom est Goscelin, ou plus justement pour être exact, Louis Goscelin d’Arondel, car s’il faut en croire la tradition, je descends des Goscelin d’Arondel qui accompagnaient Guillaume le Bâtard dans la conquête de l’Angleterre, et qui ont encore aujourd’hui des représentants à la Chambre des lords.
Malgré cette noble origine, mon père consentit à donner son nom à une bourgeoise, fille d’un simple fabricant de papiers à Courtigis, sur les bords de l’Eure ; il est vrai que la bourgeoise était riche, tandis que le gentilhomme était pauvre.

Hector Malot, né à la Bouille (près de Rouen), le 20 mai 1830, mort à Fontenay-sous-Bois, le 17 juillet 1907, devint, après des études de droit et des emplois de clerc de notaire puis de journaliste, l’auteur d’environ soixante-dix romans de veine réaliste, dans lesquels il offre un panorama fidèle de tous les milieux de la société de son siècle.
